Whether you're visiting Port Stephens for the first time or you’re a local looking for a unique adventure, quad biking through the iconic Stockton Sand Dunes is a must-do experience. At Quad Bike King, we’re often asked a number of questions by first-time and returning guests alike. Below, we answer the most frequently asked questions to help you prepare for your quad biking adventure in Nelson Bay.

What Ages Are Allowed to Ride Quad Bikes, and at What Speeds?

Quad biking is a thrilling outdoor activity, but safety is always our number one priority. We allow riders aged 16 years and older, provided they meet the minimum height requirement of 130cm. For safety and legal reasons, we do not allow doubling—each participant must ride their own bike.
Riders aged 16 to 18 can only participate in our Scenic Tour, which is designed to be more relaxed and has a maximum speed of 20 km/h. This ensures a controlled and comfortable ride while still allowing participants to enjoy the stunning surroundings.
Riders 18 years and older can choose between the Scenic Tour and the more adventurous Safari Tour, which can reach speeds up to 40 km/h, depending on the group’s ability and environmental conditions. Regardless of age or experience, our trained guides will match each rider to the appropriate group and pace to ensure safety and enjoyment.

What Are the Differences Between the Quad Biking Experiences Offered?

We currently offer two distinct quad biking experiences, both departing from our base camp on the dunes at Stockton Bight:
Scenic Tour
  • Who it's for: Riders aged 16+ who prefer a slower pace or are new to quad biking.
  • Speed limit: Capped at 20 km/h.
  • Experience: A relaxed, guided ride through sand dunes and along the beach, ideal for families or cautious riders. Perfect for enjoying the landscape at a steady pace.
  • Note: This is the only tour available for riders under 18.
Safari Tour
  • Who it's for: Riders aged 18+ looking for more thrill and pace.
  • Speed limit: Up to 40 km/h, guided and adjusted based on rider ability.
  • Experience: A more adventurous ride over varying terrain, including tall dunes and open beach sections. Riders are grouped by speed preference to maximize enjoyment.
Both tours include a stop on the beachfront for photos and questions before returning to base camp on a slightly more intense ride back.

Your adventure starts with:
  • A safety video and mandatory briefing.
  • On-site training on how to start, stop, steer, and control your quad bike.
  • A chance to ask questions and get comfortable before heading into the dunes.
Our experienced guides will assess your confidence and place you into an appropriate group, ensuring that you are neither overwhelmed nor held back during the ride. We have high guide-to-rider ratio to make sure no one is left behind and everyone enjoys a personalised experience.
